Within this project, we have collected a large amount of audio-visual data of children's talk, which we are analysing using Conversation Analysis (CA), a detailed and precise method for understanding real–time communicative interactions. For this project we are looking for a research assistant to help with the transcription and first-level analysis of the data. You will use dedicated software to prepare accurate word-level and action/movement-level transcriptions of the recording. You will work in close cooperation with researchers in the project. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is passionate about research, who wants to learn new analytical skills in the area of human linguistic and social interaction, and who wants to be trained in advanced use of research software. We are a friendly and welcoming research group with an informal culture, dedicated to intellectual excellence.

  • Attending online weekly CA colloquium to enhance CA skills

  • Develop knowledge of CA to inform transcription and analysis, under the guidance of the project lead.

  • working to timelines

  • accuracy, patience and eye for detail

  • computer literacy (MS Office/Apple applications)

  • familiarity with social science and/or linguistic research methods and methodologies (minimally at UG level)

  • excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • ability to work in teams as well as in a self-directed manner

Location
Hendon Campus

Benefits

  • This internship is a perfect starting point for a student or recent graduate who is interested in research in human interaction, language and communication. You will gain experience and skills that will be valuable for further research, in academic, commercial or public contexts.

  • You will be mentored and managed directly by the research project lead, who will also coordinate the transcription skills training that takes place at the beginning of the internship.

  • No need to have extensive experience with any of the skills mentioned above, our successful applicant is someone who wants to learn and is enthusiastic.
