Role

Unitemps are recruiting for a Faculty Learning Technologist within the Faculty of Engineering. The role is to work the date of 16th December 2024 and will run until 2nd May 2025 full time at 36.5 hours per week. Payment is set at £22.66+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.
 
A 6 month secondment cover to join the Learning Technology Unit within the Faculty of Engineering Sciences. 
This role is hybrid with a mixture of home and office working, office work is based at the Bloomsbury and UCL East (Stratford) campuses. Hybrid is 20% (office) - 80% (home), but this can be discussed with the line manager. 
 
Working in a team of three (including yourself) the Faculty Learning Technologists (FLTs) are e-learning specialists with a remit to support development of high quality blended and online courses and enable the development of local e-learning 'teams'. FLTs are well placed to understand and respond swiftly to faculty and departmental needs such as supporting the network of Connected learning leads and with the help of the central university Digital education team and ARENA colleagues to implement and support faculty and departmental strategies and priorities, including distance learning and CPD. The post is managed by the Faculty learning technology lead and is part of the Centre for Engineering through a reporting line to the centre director. 
 
The post is located within the Engineering Sciences Faculty Office. The FLT is expected to support the development of local strategies and engage with shared college-wide initiatives such as for example, growing online assessment, enhanced use of Lecturecast, classroom technologies and improving departmental use of Moodle and other learning technologies.

Duties and responsibilities
Supporting local and institutional networks: 

  • Supporting the network of Connected learning leads
  • Connecting academics with others who are facing or have solved similar e-learning challenges
  • Running faculty-based events and staff development activities with Digital Education and Arena colleagues
  • Providing advice and training on online learning design
  • Supporting staff to develop e-learning expertise, training them in producing, managing, and maintaining digital content.
  • Advising staff in the development of accessible and copyright-cleared content
  • Guiding and working with academics to develop learning designs for specific locally endorsed priorities and projects
  • Developing usage scenarios and identifying good practice
  • Working with administrative and academic champions to enhance and monitor the departmental/faculty e-learning environment
  • Advising and training staff in teaching and learning focused online communication, facilitation, and student support
  • Advising and training staff in video production and editing using appropriate multi-cam and lighting set-ups
  • Advising and training academic and professional services staff in the best use of UCL wide and faculty specific learning technologies and tools. 
  • Course development
  • Creating Moodle and related templates
  • Establishing workflows to support and manage content development and delivery
  • Working with course teams to implement online learning designs
  • Creating e-learning content and activities from academic material to meet agreed project needs
  • Supervising student e-learning assistants working on content development
  • Quality assurance of online courses

Skills and experience

  • Minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 4 / C or above (including Mathematics and English Language) or equivalent
  • Educated to A Level (minimum of two at Grade C or above) or equivalent, or having acquired relevant experience
  • Educated to degree standard or equivalent, or having acquired relevant experience
  • Experience of teaching or training in a group environment including evidence of effectively sharing technical knowledge and skill to support the work and learning of others
  • An understanding of how web-based, multimedia and mobile technologies can be used to enhance learning, teaching and assessment
  • An understanding of the pedagogical, social and cultural issues affecting the adoption of new learning environments/technologies and ability to develop strategies to deal with them
  • Experience of working within a HE or similar research environment
  • Ability to influence strategy, policy and practice
  • Demonstrable expertise in the use of virtual learning environments, online assessment tools and lecture capture software
  • Experience of teaching or training online and the ability to relate traditional teaching practice to the online environment
  • Strong knowledge of relevant academic literature and the ability to develop and maintain their own expertise in both technological and pedagogical fields
  • Ability to build relationships at all levels of the organisation
  • The ability to manage a workload with changing priorities and tight deadlines as part of a flexible team
  • Willingness and ability to undertake training and adapt to new systems quickly
  • Ability to direct, record, produce and edit video content
  • Strong customer care skills with significant experience of providing support in a large institution
  • Ability to take initiative and contribute to decision making
  • An understanding of policy and legal issues, including copyright, data protection and accessibility legislation.
