Role
We are looking for a part-time Research Assistant with demonstrable interest and skills in LLM (AI\ML) research.
The role is based within the School of Business, Computing and Social Sciences, home to a range of courses across business, data science, technical computing, and social sciences. The title of the project is ' Virtual Assistant for Financial Education based on LLM'.
The School of Business, Computing, and Social Science is located across three campuses within Cheltenham and Gloucester which provide inspiring learning and teaching environments. This post will hybrid and when on campus will be based in the regency style Park Campus, Cheltenham which is home to state-of-the-art technology, collaborative learning spaces and a dynamic team of educators.
Duties and responsibilities
Skills and experience
The following eligibility criteria apply:
A. Educational and Technical Skills
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree holder or current student of Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Financial Technology (FinTech), or a related field.
- Familiarity with NLP techniques, transformers, and large language models (LLMs) such as GPT, BERT, or similar.
- Strong programming skills in Python, with experience in libraries/frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Hugging Face Transformers.Knowledge of training, fine-tuning, and deploying language models, including prompt engineering.
- Proficiency in data wrangling and preparation, specifically for textual datasets.
- Experience in data cleaning, annotation, and handling structured/unstructured financial data.
B. Research and Development Skills
- Creating and conducting surveys.
- Strong research skills, with experience in academic writing and publishing considered a plus.
C. Preferred Experience
- Prior experience in building conversational agents or virtual assistants.
- Android application development.
- Knowledge of ethical and privacy considerations in AI, particularly for sensitive applications in finance.
- Exposure to financial datasets and understanding of financial data privacy standards and regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with financial education content creation, or a demonstrated ability to quickly learn and integrate new finance concepts.

Additional information
The research assistant will be working for a Multidisciplinary QR project under Computing, Engineering, Finance and Business departments. The project is aimed to publish the results of the research work in a Q1 journal.
The research assistant has to report about the progress on regular basis to hiring manager and to the project team on less frequent basis.
