Movema is an award-winning organisation that connects people and communities, helping nurture a safer and more understanding and tolerant world. Using world dance we give value and support to people who are often overlooked or marginalised in society. Established in 2009 and operating as a Charity since 2021, based and operating in Liverpool and Bristol, Movema was co-founded by four female dance artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and has engaged over100,000 people over the past 15 years. Movema's vision is that World dance is celebrated and enables people to create art, improve their health and wellbeing and heal divisions in and between communities.
With a mission based on three main pillars, Movema aims to:
• Share culturally diverse dances in safe/safer spaces increasing understanding and tolerance.
• Co-create with our communities and artists a programme of performances, participatory workshops and artist training which celebrates and amplifies the strengths in our communities.
• Reach out to and transform lives of those most in need, especially those who have lived experience of racism or other barriers that have impacted their ability to engage with dance, such as living in poverty, living with mental health issues.
We achieve social change through creative approaches, constantly innovating to deepen our impact and expand our reach. Movema has become a cornerstone in Liverpool and Bristol regions, particularly in high-need areas, by providing high-quality arts experiences and reaching marginalised communities whilst celebrating diversity, promoting health and wellbeing, and building connected and cohesive communities.
