THE ROLE
Our client DMU Sport are currently recruiting a 2x Learn To Swim Instructors to work at the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Leisure Centre. The Learn to Swim Instructor will deliver high-quality, inclusive swimming lessons to a diverse range of participants as part of the DMUactive programme. Instructors will be responsible for planning, preparing, and delivering safe, engaging, and effective swimming sessions for various skill levels, from beginners to competent participants.

- Rate of pay: £16.26
- Holiday Pay: 2.54
This role is a campus based role working when the DMUactive Learn to Swim sessions are scheduled to take place throughout the 2024/2025 academic year;
- Wednesdays 2.30pm – 3.00pm (beginners)
- Wednesdays 3.00pm – 3.30pm (beginners)
- Wednesdays 3.30pm – 4.00pm (intermediate)
- Wednesdays 4.00pm – 4.30pm (intermediate)
Delivery will be in line with the DMU undergraduate academic calendar so the following are when you would be delivering the sessions:
- Term 1 30th of September – 13th of December
- Term 2 6th of January – 4th of April
- Term 3 28th of April – 13th of June
Even if you can’t deliver a session each week then we would still encourage you to apply as we are looking to have a bank of instructors who can deliver the sessions due to the role being aimed at current DMU students to uptake.
Duties and responsibilities
- Lesson Delivery: Conduct structured swimming lessons for all ability levels, ensuring lessons are tailored to individual needs.
- Program Development: Create and evaluate lesson plans based on the Swim England or STA curriculum to help participants progress confidently.
- Participant Safety: Ensure safety during all lessons, adhering to health and safety regulations and safeguarding protocols.
- Performance Evaluation: Continuously assess participant performance, providing feedback, and adapting lessons for effective skill development.
- Equipment Maintenance: Manage and maintain swimming equipment, reporting any issues to DMUsport.
- Communication: Liaise with DMUactive staff and provide guidance to participants, fostering an inclusive, supportive environment.
Skills and experience
Qualifications and Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
- ASA/Swim England Level 2 Certificate in Teaching Aquatics or STA Level 2 Award in Swimming Teaching.
- CPR and First Aid certification.
- Experience: Proven experience in planning, leading, and evaluating swimming lessons independently.
Skills Required:
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to engage and motivate a variety of participants.
- Proficiency in assessing and adapting techniques to meet participants’ unique needs.
Essential Knowledge:
- Teaching and Aquatics: Knowledge of the principles of swimming teaching, including technical skills for various strokes and essential aquatic skills.
- Safety and Inclusion: Understanding of safeguarding, safety protocols, and inclusive teaching practices.
- Self-Evaluation: Ability to reflect on teaching performance, set professional development goals, and adapt teaching methods as needed.
Preferred Attributes:
- Higher Education Experience: Experience teaching in a higher education or community sports setting.
- Additional qualifications: such as Level 2 Teaching for specific groups (e.g., teaching vulnerable adults and children).
- Administration: The ideal candidate must be able to provide administrative support for the DMUactive programme and any other programmes that you may be offered the opportunity to support.
- Passionate about physical activity, sport and wellbeing: The ideal candidate will be passionate about the delivery of physical activity and sport, especially in relation to swimming, and also be passionate about helping to support the DMU community to look after their wellbeing.
- Experience of supporting sessions/events: The ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of, or have previous experience of supporting the running of a physical activity/fitness programme or event.
- Interpersonal Skills: The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, especially regarding teamwork.
