Role
The University of Edinburgh is currently offering a part-time opportunity for a student to join the Heritage Collections Team as an Outreach and Communications Intern for the Esther Inglis Project. Heritage Collections oversee the University's Special Collections and Museums, which include rare books, manuscripts, archives, art and historic musical instruments. Within this role, you will plan and deliver a public ‘launch’ event and create a range of supporting materials to promote the new online exhibition celebrating the life and works of Esther Inglis (c. 1570-1624), a Franco-Scottish Jacobean calligrapher.
Duties and responsibilities
- Planning, promoting and delivering a public ‘launch’ event for the new Esther Inglis Project exhibition;
- Assisting the Heritage Collections Promotional Group with marketing the online exhibition by creating a range of supporting materials;
- Producing content, such as short articles, for the project blog website and social media channels;
- Working alongside the Project Curator to identify relevant materials within the University’s Heritage Collections and conducting new research where necessary.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria:
- A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for UoE student employment; therefore, you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment). You also must not hold the position of ‘Resident Assistant’;
- Based in the UK for the duration of the work, able to work on campus when required (we cannot accommodate individuals working overseas due to tax and legal implications), and able to attend a Right to Work Check in person if needed;
- Proven interest, or experience in, one or more of the following research areas: early-modern history, seventeenth-century history, women’s history, women’s writing, the history of books, Scottish cultural history;
- Experience of, or proven interest in, working in an archive, library or research environment;
- Evidence of an interest in public history and/or working with public audiences, within the cultural heritage sector – such as University courses, volunteering, extra-curricular talks or workshops;
- Demonstrable ability to work independently, with strong time-management skills;
- Experience of writing content for a range of audiences, adapting tone as required.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience of planning and delivering events;
- Proven knowledge of social media marketing to raise awareness of events.
Location
Hybrid, split between working from home and in Main Library.
