The intern will be part of our small, dynamic team at Arete Zero Carbon, which focuses on environmental sustainability and educating future environmental leaders. This role is designed to offer real-world experience in researching sustainability topics and creating thought leadership content for our website. Our team is based in Liverpool City Centre, and the role offers the flexibility to work remotely and on-site. Given the rapid developments in sustainability, the chosen intern will contribute to shaping our narrative on the most current sustainability issues of 2025.

 

 

Duties and responsibilities
 Research Project Opportunity:

 Investigating the Consequences of Non-Compliance with Emerging Sustainability Legislation About the Project: As the landscape of sustainability reporting rapidly evolves, businesses face new mandates and legislation designed to enhance transparency, accountability, and environmental responsibility. This project will delve into the consequences for companies that fail to report or meet compliance standards under pivotal frameworks like the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), and the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). 
 
Key Research Focus Areas: 
1. Legislation Deep Dive: Conduct an in-depth analysis of upcoming sustainability regulations and reporting frameworks. Understand and document the critical elements that companies are required to meet. 
2. Scenario Analysis: Develop scenario models to explore outcomes for businesses that choose not to comply with these standards. 
3. Cost of Non-Compliance: Quantify the financial, reputational, and operational impacts of non-compliance, including potential fines, increased recruitment costs, and lost market opportunities. 
4. Industry Impact: 
Assess sector-specific implications, identifying which industries are most at risk and where opportunities for improvement are most critical. Why Join? Skills and experience
We are seeking an individual who: 

• Is currently pursuing a degree in a relevant field (e.g., Environmental Science, Sustainability, Communications, Business, Economic, Finance or similar). 
• Has strong research skills, with the ability to gather, assess, and consolidate complex information. 
• Possesses excellent written communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, engaging content. 
• Is self-motivated and can work independently to produce high-quality work. 
• Has a passion for sustainability and staying up-to-date on current environmental issues.
 • Is able to manage their time effectively to meet deadlines, especially when balancing this role with their academic commitments.
