Role
As part of the Go Digital Accelerator programme, Staffordshire University has entered into a partnership with an innovative and growing Cannock based company called SMB Pressings Ltd. They manufacture metal structures and parts. These items can be standard which are sold off the shelf or manufactured to the client’s own specifications.
The aim of this project is to integrate a sales platform to their website, showcasing a selection of their off the shelf products with the option to purchase these through the website. In addition to this, a more bespoke order system is required to be implemented, to allow customer to request bespoke items.
This collaboration is bespoke and a truly unique opportunity for you to get involved in and greatly increase your career development moving forward.
This role is funded by UKSPF and will be supported by an academic member of staff with relevant expertise.
Duties and responsibilities
This project will include 3 distinct areas of research and development and are broken down as follows:-
Familiarisation and planning.
- Work with the business to understand the desired outcomes of the project.
- Prioritise the outcomes identifying ‘need to haves’ and ‘nice to haves’.
- Analyse the current website and it’s limitations
Research and Implementation and Testing
- Research and present suggested solutions to the business.
- Work with the business to identify the most suitable option to meet the immediate needs, as well as providing the best possible chance of meeting future needs and stretch goals.
- Upload the product stock images, details and pricing.
- Ensure the UI/UX is in line with the business needs
- Ensure that the selected sales platform links in with the businesses current sales, invoicing and stock management processes.
- Conduct testing of the system ensuring to include the current business users.
- Demonstrate and deliver any training required to key members of the business.
Final report
- Review the fully implemented project against the original scope and compare the new system with the previous system.
- Full report/presentation to company on the outcome of the project.
- Provide a written summary of the project, it’s original goals, it’s final outputs and the benefits to the business for the University to feed back to the funder, to show the value of the project and their investment. (This can be the same full report presented to the business if it is not too technical)
Skills and experience
The successful candidate will need to have:
ESSENTIAL
- Research, professional and academic report writing and presentation skills
- Compare and report writing on e-commerce site building platforms
- Practical e-commerce site building experience/skills using off-the-shelf or open-source platforms
- Experience with secure web application development e.g. based on OWASP
- Understanding and compliance for Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS)
- Working under pressure and with deadline
- Working independently, on-site and remotely under the supervision of a company and an academic supervisor
DESIRED
- Professional experience with popular e-commerce site building platforms e.g. shopify, wordpress etc.

Benefits
This appointment is available on a fixed-term basis of 20hrs per week over 12 weeks.
(This role is for a total of 240hrs, how this is delivered is flexible and can be more hours per week ensuring compliance with any relevant visa restrictions)
The programme needs to be completed before the end of Feb 2025
