Role

The overall purpose of the role is to Support learning, teaching and research activities, and you will be responsible for the day to day running of specialist workshop and studio facilities within the Faculty. 

You will support the Fine Art and Painting and Drawing programmes through the demonstration of 3D fabrication techniques and processes and studio installations.  The post holder will undertake the post from a practitioner’s perspective and will ideally have experience of preparing wood for canvas stretchers, use of both hand tools and woodwork machinery and laser cutting. Experience of casting would also be advantageous. You will also be responsible for the efficient and safe operation of the workshop, studios and equipment within, providing guidance and through the supervision of students/users. Technician duties will include storing and safely disposing of specialist consumables, maintaining stock as well as supporting students with their own projects in the workshop. There may also be a requirement to reconfigure the studio spaces and prepare them for student work to be displayed.

Duties and responsibilities

• Demonstrate fabrication and workshop processes as well as the supervision of students in the event of both the attendance and absence of timetabled staff. • Provide guidance on technical aspects of student work, offering advice.

• Respond directly to student requests for help/ support in respect of their independent learning.

• Maintain a general overview of health and safety in both the workshop and studios and ensure the use of safe working practices, including conducting risk assessments and safety audits in accordance with Health and Safety policies.

• Liaise with all academic staff requiring use of facilities for teaching purposes to ensure that their requirements and appropriate access are addressed.

• Provide students with materials purchased from support them in creating accurate orders based on their needs.

• Liaise with IT, to ensure the maintenance of any IT provision applicable to the workshops and Fine Art studios.

• Attend relevant Faculty committees and forums as required.

• Work closely with students and staff to translate theoretical ideas into practical and/or creative solutions.

• Carry out daily and routing maintenance of all equipment, including safety and security of resources ensuring that the Workshop and studios are in a clean, tidy and serviceable order at the beginning and end of each day.

• Liaise with other technicians in the Faculty and wider University environment.

• Any other duties commensurate with the post which may be required from time to time by the Faculty Dean

• Set up and prepare exhibitions/shows where applicable which may require some unsociable hours.

• Assist with external events where applicable. Assist with internal projects.

• The post holder will be expected to undertake other responsibilities and tasks as reasonably requested by the Line Manager

• The post holder will be responsible and accountable for ensuring all employment legislative requirements are adhered to including equality and diversity and health and safety issues

Skills and experience

HND/ Degree or equivalent qualification and/ or higher degree or relevant industry experience

Ability to provide first line support for all Workshop and Studio equipment and processes

Demonstrable knowledge of traditional wood fabrication processes

Demonstrable knowledge of digital fabrication processes including laser cutting

Demonstrable knowledge of casting processes

First Aid trained or willingness to undertake

Knowledge of procurement procedures including quotes and purchase orders

Experience in maintaining a safe and healthy working environment

Recent experience of demonstrating to or teaching others, both individually and in groups.

Ability to support learning, teaching and research in the Faculty through demonstrable knowledge of current practice

Ability to work in an agile manner across a range of teams

Ability to adapt to organisational change

Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to team work

Ability to motivate learners

Ability to plan, prioritise and organise own work/resources to achieve agreed goals; experience of multitasking
