Role

UCL Institute of Education, University College London is recruiting two Research Assistants. The role is to work ASAP and will last six months part time at 5.98 hours per week. Payment is set at £21.01+ holiday pay per hour and the role will be HYBRID based.

The UCL Institute of Education at University College London is seeking to appoint two motivated qualitative researchers to work on a discourse analytic project that investigates the interactional processes in human-human interaction and human-AI interaction. 

The post-holders will collect and analyse interactional data guided by Dr David Wei Dai (UCL Institute of Education). Datasets will be in both English and Mandarin Chinese.

The project aims to examine the relationship between multimodal semiotic repertoire and interactional patterns in both human-human interaction and human-AI interaction.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct and draft preliminary literature review
  • Recruit participants
  • Coordinate with participants to collect audio and video recording data
  • Collect ethnographic and interview data as needed
  • Edit audio/video data to facilitate processing and data analysis
  • Analyse the data using discourse analysis (e.g., Conversation Analysis, Membership Categorization Analysis and multimodal discourse analysis)
  • Analysis ethnographic data and interview data using qualitative research methods
  • Transcribe interactional data using Jefferson and Mondala conventions
  • Write up preliminary analysis and finding
  • Assist with other incidental matters related to the research process (e.g., data storage, research ethics)
  • Contribute to research reporting as requested (e.g., draft text, approve draft manuscript for journal submission)

Skills and experience

  • Holds minimally a Masters Degree in applied linguistics, linguistics, intercultural communication, TESOL, communication or a related area
  • Experience and competence in conducting discourse analysis (e.g., Conversation Analysis, Membership Categorization Analysis and multimodal discourse analysis)
  • Experience and competence in employing qualitative research methods (e.g., ethnography, interview)
  • Experience in research publication and dissemination (e.g., recruiting and engaging with participants, drafting different sections in publications, ensuring a high level of accuracy and attention to details in all areas of work)
  • The ability to work independently and collaboratively, ensuring deadlines are met and helping the team to achieve its goals
  • Experience in editing, processing and optimizing audio/video data
  • Strong written and spoken skills in English and Mandarin Chinese
  • Ability to transcribe interactional data using Jefferson and Mondala conventions
  • The ability to work flexibly, creatively and sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds
