Description
Role
*Ringfenced for LJMU Midwifery and Art Students*
Breastfeeding is clearly associated with short, medium and long-term benefits for mothers and infants (Victora et al 2016). However, for England, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months is <1%. Breastfeeding across Merseyside is particularly low, with all wards in Liverpool, Sefton and Knowsley being below the National average for giving of ‘any’ breastmilk (ONS 2024). Interventions to increase breastfeeding rates across the UK have made little impact and new ways of educating around the benefits of breastfeeding are needed. One such medium is that of utilising Art as a ‘tool’ in health messaging, which has been found to be successful in previous work.
This project aims to combine the knowledge and skills of LJMU Midwifery and Art undergraduate students to produce physical pieces of art that will convey the benefits of breastfeeding in an eye-catching and meaningful way to the general public. This aims to raise awareness around the benefits of breastfeeding, increasing knowledge and educating viewers. The artwork will be exhibited in venues across Liverpool and will be premiered at the LJMU Art final degree show.
Duties and responsibilities
Midwifery students will: Lead group sessions to develop themes for the project work (art pieces)Work with art students to inform, advise, review and feedback on the project work. Produce artwork labels related to the project work
Art students will: Attend group sessions that develop themes for the project work. Work with the student midwives to develop the project work using feedback. Undertake installation of the project work
Skills and experience
Midwifery students: Students must be active on the undergraduate midwifery programme, have an interest in promoting and protecting breastfeeding and have good knowledge of the benefits of breastfeeding. They should be studying at level 5 and must be able to commit to the whole internship whilst ensuring they continue to complete their clinical placements and study in university.
Art students: Students will be interested in exploring the relationship of art and health and be open to working with breast feeding as a subject through their practice. Key to this project is an element of co-production and taking feedback from midwifery students and staff to ensure the messaging supports the campaign and will ‘talk to’ the target audience. You should be studying at Level 5 ideally, but we will consider applications from Level 6 students if this project fits with your wider concerns.
