Description

Role
* Ringfenced to students studying 'MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practise at LJMU', but can be from any of the year groups. *

This project focuses on building a community of practice for trainee person-centred therapists (i.e., students enrolled on the MA in Counselling and Psychotherapy Practice), with a specific focus on person-centred practice. This is an extra-curricular activity/group designed to enhancement students’ critical thinking skills and their knowledge of person-centred/experiential theory. This project is directly linked to the principles of person-centred pedagogy by encouraging students involvement with the teaching and facilitation of the group, the development of group-initiated tasks and discussions, and the evaluation of the project by group members (Rogers, 1969).

This project aims to examine person-centred/experiential therapy through a critical lens by selecting different person-centred/experiential resources to discuss as a group each month (2 hours per group over 12 months). Students will be provided links to resources in the week before the group, then the group will be used to discuss them. Group will be held via MS Teams. The project will endeavor to use person-centred/experiential resources (academic papers, videos, podcast episodes etc) as discussion points for the group, using a variety of different mediums will make the group more accessible for students. The monthly discussion element will provide opportunities for students to discuss person-centred therapy from different viewpoints, in a safe supportive space. There will also be a focus on anti-oppressive practice.

The project outcomes are closely linked to a selection of key learning outcomes on the MA programme. This means that students will be developing skills and knowledge directly related to their course.

The group will run one Wednesday evening each month for November, December, January, February, March, April, May and June. It will run 6.30pm to 8pm, so this needs to be a convenient time for applicants for most of the sessions.

Duties and responsibilities

Interns will undertake (in conjunction with the project lead) the planning of each session: consideration of resources, accessibility for students, communication to group members etc. Their student status will provide invaluable input into the appropriateness of resources to share and discussion points, so that the group is focused on students’ needs.

Interns will be responsible for the group facilitation (after a period of observation and support from project lead) : opening and starting the session, facilitating group discussion, managing technical support (MS Teams), communicating with students during the session.

Interns will be responsible for any administration required: emailing attendees; communicating resources and timings etc; following up enquiries or requests.

Interns will also be responsible for monitoring feedback from attendees and collating feedback at the end of the project.

This is an internship and as such should be seen as an education and career development opportunity, carried out under the strict guidance of LJMU staff.
