Description

Role

The International Conference of Undergraduate Research (ICUR) provides undergraduate researchers with a unique opportunity to present their research in an interdisciplinary, international environment through real-time, video-linked sessions from their home campus. Presenters also have the opportunity to engage with a comprehensive programme of support for academic and professional skills development throughout the year leading up to the event.

ICUR is student-centred and student-led. We’re looking to recruit a current undergraduate student at the University of Warwick to work as a Student Director up to and during ICUR 2025. The ICUR support programme takes place throughout the academic year, and the conference itself is currently slated to take place on 18th and 19th June 2024. This role is due to start in Oct 2024 and runs until the end of Jul 2025. At ICUR – and in the Institute for Advanced Teaching and Learning (IATL) – we believe undergraduate research is not simply a stepping stone on the way to “real” research: undergraduates are integral in research culture, and undergraduate research is an exciting, creative space where new ideas are explored. We’re looking for someone who is passionate about undergraduate research; enthusiastic about supporting students to develop their skills; and interested in broadening access to research and dissemination opportunities. Experience and/or interest in social media marketing would be advantageous.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team of staff and students to help develop the conference. There are five key areas of work in this role:

  • Work as part of a team of Student Directors based at the University of Warwick (and potentially at one or more of our international partner institutions) to publicise and promote the work of ICUR. This includes creating and posting regular content for the ICUR Impact blog, and all ICUR social media accounts, as well as developing new ways of publicising student research opportunities.
  • Support ICUR student training and events throughout the academic year leading up to the conference, working with the staff organising team to co-create opportunities for student skills development.
  • Work alongside staff at the University of Warwick to review ICUR 2025 abstract submissions and support students in the lead up to the conferences, including helping to facilitate training sessions for students applying to present at ICUR 2025.
  • Host and chair internationally linked sessions at ICUR 2025. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to introduce and manage sessions throughout the two-day event; provide the event introduction; introduce staff and student speaker; and closing remarks.
  • Work alongside staff and other Student Directors to plan and facilitate other ICUR related events and activities, to evaluate the ICUR Experience, and to contribute to its enhancement.

All work for this role, including training, will be remunerated.

We’re actively seeking applications from individuals across all departments, subjects, and backgrounds, and we’re particularly interested in receiving applications from students who are passionate about diversifying academic research and bringing new ideas to the table, as well as supporting peers in their research journeys.

Duties and responsibilities

Duties anticipated include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work as part of an international student team to publicise and promote the work of ICUR. This will include regularly updating and creating content for ICUR’s social media accounts.
  • Work as part of an international student team to design and create entries for ICUR’s student blog ‘Impact’.
  • Work as part of an international student team to manage the ICUR Student Community Teams space and to help foster a sense of community amongst all students involved in ICUR 2025.
  • Work closely with event organisers at the University of Warwick to review abstract submissions for ICUR 2025.
  • Work as part of an international student team to plan and facilitate keynote sessions and other relevant events and activities at ICUR 2025.
  • Help manage the ICUR Students email inbox, answering queries and requests as needed.
  • Organise and attend regular meetings (held via Microsoft Teams or other video conferencing platform) with other Student Directors based at the University of Warwick (and potentially one or more of our international partner institutions);
  • Attend, support and help to promote student training activities in the run up to ICUR 2025;
  • Host and chair internationally linked sessions throughout ICUR 2025;
  • Attend campus events to help promote the work of ICUR, IATL, and other student research opportunities such as Reinvention journal and BCUR;
  • Contribute to the enhancement of the ICUR Experience by participating in student-led projects.

Applicants must be available to work at ICUR 2025 in person from Monday to Thursday of the conference week. ICUR 2025 is currently slated to take place on 18th – 19th June 2025.

Applicants must be available and work additional hours as required (will be agreed between ICUR and Student Director teams) between October 2024 and July 2025 and be available for ICUR 2025. We anticipate that this role will involve up to 100 hours work in total and some travel opportunities may be available.

Skills and experience

  • Be enrolled as a current undergraduate student at the University of Warwick during the length of the appointment (until 7th July 2025) and undertaking undergraduate study at the University (unfortunately, we are not able to accept applications for this role from current undergraduates who are on intercalated years abroad or in industry)
  • Interest in undergraduate research
  • Passionate about supporting and inspiring other students through their research journeys
  • Passionate about connecting with people and ability to build relationships quickly
  • Marketing and social media skills
  • Effective communication (oral and written) skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proactive approach to work
  • Strong academic results to date
  • Ability to speak confidently to a large audience, both in-person and online
  • Ability to work well under pressure
  • A proactive and organised approach to work
