Description

Role
The AccessAbility Centre at the University of Leicester is seeking to recruit manual note-takers to work with disabled students in all subjects, in particular: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES, MEDICINE, CHEMISTRY, COMPUTER SCIENCE, CRIMINOLOGY, ECONOMICS, ENGINEERING, GEOLOGY, LAW, MANAGEMENT, MATHEMATICS, NATURAL SCIENCES, PHYSICS, NURSING & MIDWIFERY this list is not exhaustive.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Note-takers need to make accurate notes, in English, and these notes must convey what has been said in the teaching session.  It will be useful if notes can be typed in the lecture where the subject allows.  Clear handwritten notes are essential in some subjects.  Notes should be delivered to the student within two working days of the teaching session.
  • The accurate administration of timesheets, which serve as the post-holder’s record of work and as evidence that support has been provided to particular students, is also expected.
  • Note takers will be expected to undertake orientation and/or sighted guiding if they are assigned to support a visually-impaired student who requires note taking support.  Training will be given to those who are expected to do this support. This work means attending the same teaching sessions as the disabled students who require note-taking support, and taking notes on their behalf.
  • Note-takers will be expected to attend lectures in person on campus for many students.

Skills and experience
In order to work as a note-taker, applicants must pass a compulsory training course or have at least three years’ paid experience in this line of work.  Successful applicants will be required to complete training which will be provided free-of-charge and will take place remotely.  It is likely that the first training session will be week commencing 16 September.  Further dates and locations will be sent to successful applicants in due course.
