Duties and responsibilities

Working as a Student Ambassador

What We Do

Middlesex University organises a variety of events, both on and off campus, involving young learners, and prospective and current students. Our Student Ambassadors are advocates for the University and its facilities as well as acting as role models, helping to raise aspirations and awareness of higher education.

Your Role as a Student Ambassador

Being a Student Ambassador means that you will enjoy a great variety of work. Your duties include showing people around the campus at our Open Days and Postgraduate Open Evenings, giving short presentations or facilitating workshops and running activities for young learners at on-campus events, and also sometimes in local schools and college. The work is flexible and part-time, meaning you can fit it around your studies.

Being a Student Ambassador is not only fun but it can help you in the following ways:

  • Gives you great work experience to add to your CV
  • Gives you the chance to make new friends with students who are not on your course
  • Helps you develop transferable skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving – all of these are in demand by employers
  • Helps you gain confidence within a friendly and supportive environment
  • Gives you the chance to earn while you are studying
  • Great opportunity to engage with young people, especially useful if you plan on pursuing teaching
  • Members of the team can give you a reference when you apply for other work

Skills and experience

As a Student Ambassador, you should be:

Interested

  • You will not gain the attention of young people if you are not interested in what they have to say to you.

Approachable

  • Young people will open up more and respond better if you make it easy for them to talk to you. Being honest and sharing day-to-day experiences can help.

Proactive

  • This applies to your attitude at events but also the administration side of the scheme. Sometimes we will need you to send details to us, or a response by a particular time, and it is not our responsibility to chase you for that – please answer emails and queries promptly, else we may have to remove you from the scheme.

Tolerant

  • If you want to encourage a young person to engage in an activity, a great deal of tolerance is required as there may be many factors or barriers preventing them from communicating with you openly.

Respectful

  • If you can demonstrate that you respect the young people no matter what difficulties they may be going through, they will in turn respect you for understanding them and being patient with them.

Inspirational

  • Ensure that you give praise where it’s due – young people who are particularly insecure or lacking in self-confidence can be given a huge boost by you saying “Well done!”, “I enjoyed working with you today”, or “Thanks for working so hard today.”

Motivational

  • You may be the only role model they have in their lives so try to motivate them as much as possible. Use your own personal experiences if this helps – but remember to maintain suitable boundaries.

Enthusiast

  • Showing enthusiasm for the work you do with young people does rub off on them and encourages them to engage and do well, and it will also make the experience memorable for them

A good listener

  • You may have to act as a sounding board for young people to release frustration or anxiety, and you will need to be able to make sensible suggestions for overcoming these.

Positive

  • Location
    Hendon/Online Middlesex University
