THE ROLE

The Wellbeing service at De Montfort University are currently recruiting a Specialist Mental Health Mentor.

Expected start date: 23rd September 2024

Expected end date: 28th March 2025

Expected interview date: (Provisional) 10th & 16th September 2024

Rate of pay: £21.62

Holiday Pay: £3.37

This role is a Hybrid role working 37 hours a week.

You will help students who are experiencing a range of mental health conditions to identify barriers to learning created by their impairment and develop useful strategies that help them achieve their academic potential.

You will provide efficient and effective services and excellent standards of customer care, working to defined service standards supporting the learning, teaching and research needs of users on and off campus.

A key feature of the role will be working with academic colleagues and other service personnel and the delivery of online and face to face support. You will work closely with the Mental Health Team in addition to colleagues from a number of related teams including Disability Advice and Support, and the Wellbeing team.

You will manage a caseload of students accessing mentoring support through the Disabled Students’ Allowance and other relevant funding.

Duties and responsibilities

 

• To provide a flexible service offering coaching, directed self-help, basic psycho- social interventions and advice to students with mental health conditions with a framework of guidance to promote the development of academic skills.• To provide mentoring support to assist students to manage their mental health in relation to their academic activities and to assist in the creating resilience and promoting independent learning.

• Develop support, guidance and self-help materials and contribute to team resources, including electronic resources, as well as working with other support teams within the service and university and informed by good practice and benchmarking within the sector.

• Be aware of and familiar with the range of support mechanisms, including assistive technology, to which the student has access in order to assist with their learning.

• To work in partnership with staff based within Student Welfare, and other parts of the university, etc.

• Monitor and maintain records/reports to meet both internal and external (e.g., legislative or national) requirements, and other administrative duties required for the post

.• Familiarise yourself with DMU’s internal procedures around issues such as health and safety, and ensure full compliance by you and your teams at all times

.• This post will be subject to an enhanced DBS check

.• To undertake corporate duties as required. This could include Graduation, Assessment Boards, Reception duties, appeal and academic offence panel representation, open day attendance.

• May need to work outside normal working hours including evenings and weekends to meet student needs.

• You will report to the Mental Health Mentor Team Manager, and will be required to liaise with a range of stakeholders within the Student Welfare Division, the wider Directorate, academic course teams, and NHS service providers.

In addition to the duties listed here, you will be required to perform other duties which are assigned from time to time. However, such other duties will be reasonable in relation to the grade.

Skills and experience

  • Educated degree level standard or equivalent experience.
  • Qualified Social Worker, Mental Health Nurse, Occupational Therapist orsimilar profession
  • Membership (and accreditation where applicable) of at least one of the following to be:

  • Previous experience in a relevant role dealing with administrative and information management systems and understanding of the relevant terminology.
  • Ability to assess complex needs and risk, to implement effective intervention, and facilitate onward referral where appropriate.
  • Knowledge of mental health conditions and other disabilities and the potential impact on academic life.
  • Knowledge of risk factors and protective factors in relation to a range of emotional, psychological and mental health conditions.
  • Professional approach to work and workcolleagues and an ability to work independently and show initiative.
  • Understanding of the Mental HealthAct, Mental Capacity Act, DataProtection Act, Safeguarding and other relevant legislation and guidance.
  • Ability to work in partnership with other relevant teams within Library andStudent Services and the wider university to support student retention and success
  • Sufficient IT skills to make effective use of e-mail, the internet, common MS Office applications, and other internal IT systems as required.
  • Satisfactory Enhanced DBS check
