Description

Role

The University of Nottingham works in partnership with Nottingham Trent University to provide university students the opportunity to work with young people in local schools, through the Students in Classrooms scheme. This programme is a 10-week paid placement where students work up to 7 hours per week.

Placements will commence from January 2025 for a 10-week period (1 day per week).

End Date: 30th April 2025

Working Hours: To be arranged, typically 5-7 hours a week worked on one day per week

Pay Rate: £11.44 per hour

Holiday Pay Rate: £1.38 per hour

Location: A local Nottingham City or Nottinghamshire County primary school

Dress Code: Dress suitable for working in a school - Further guidance will be given during training  

Successful applicants are also required  to attend two, compulsory, full-day training sessions for their scheme as follows:

Training 1:

Everyone must attend one day at the start of November, either Saturday 9th November (approximately 10am - 2pm) or Wednesday 13th November (approximately 1-5pm) .

Training 2:

Everyone must attend one day at the end of November, exact dates to be confirmed.

 Due to the nature of these roles, you will be required to undertake a DBS check and provide references to ascertain your suitability to work with children. You will also be required to register with your university's branch of Unitemps

Duties and responsibilities

  • To support pupil attainment and engagement with learning.
  • To work with individuals or small groups of pupils on literacy and other work specified by classroom teacher.
  • To provide support to classroom teachers and pastoral staff.
  • To be a positive role model for pupils, acting responsibly and appropriately when working with young people, their parents/carers and school staff.
  • To help to raise pupils’ self-esteem, motivation, confidence, persistence and application.
  • To help raise pupils’ awareness of the opportunities that higher education can offer them and raise their awareness of routes to higher education.
  • To help pupils to see the connection between their current studies and the future stages in their development.
  • To complete and return all necessary monitoring and administration documents in a timely manner.
  • To complete weekly reflective logs to support evaluation and scheme development.
  • To network, share best practice and provide peer support to other Primary Learning Advocates.
  • To complete all training, induction and checks as requested.
  • To submit all timesheets in a timely manner.

Essential

  • A positive attitude to dealing with challenging situations.

Desirable

  • Knowledge of educational and social issues facing children and young people, particularly those from widening participation backgrounds.
  • An understanding of the current National Curriculum.

Experience

  • Experience of working with children and young people.
  • Experience of communicating with people from diverse backgrounds.

Qualifications 

Essential

  • A current student of Nottingham Trent University or the University of Nottingham.

Desirable 

  • A relevant Post-16 qualification at grade C or above
