Applications are invited for Summer Placement Project: Feasibility Assessment of a Hydrogen Fuelled Micro Turbine

The successful candidate will work with an academic supervisor to support technical activities on the current kerosene-fuelled micro turbine and assess the feasibility of a new retrofit hydrogen fuel system to the research facility.

Duties and responsibilities

This project will investigate the feasibility of extending a kerosene fuelled micro turbine to gaseous hydrogen fuel. The current kerosene fuelled micro turbine

will be run with technical staff to assess the baseline performance of the micro turbine. Following this, the feasibility of installing a retrofit gaseous hydrogen

fuel system will be pursued by investigating the mechanical design of the combustion system, the wider fuel system required, exhaust gas analysing systems and the hydrogen safety needed for this research facility. The information and data collected will be reported via both a written report and presentation.

There will be a requirement to attend meetings and to present the findings

Skills and experience
As a guide this post is most suitable for BEng/BSc or MEng/MSc students, on the second, third or fourth year of their programme. Students from an Engineering or Science programme are encouraged to apply. Some background in chemistry or chemical engineering would also be useful, but not essential.
