Interpretation research intern into colonial legacies at Chester Zoo
This project is a collaboration between LJMU and Chester Zoo. For over 90 years Chester Zoo has been a leading conservation and education charity and an amazing, award-winning visitor attraction. With over 20,000 individual animals across 500+ species, there’s interpretation of all kinds at the site, including over 2,000 signs and interactives. Like many museums, zoos are associated with colonialism. Many zoos began when animals were exhibited in private collections after conquest of their home countries. Additionally, animals from across the world are named after ‘explorers’, often white Europeans, and the date animals were 'discovered' usually means the date they were described by Western scientists. We would like a student to undertake a review project focused on colonial legacies within the zoo.
The candidate must be available to work full-time (9-5pm) for 4 weeks at Chester Zoo. Please ensure you are aware of commuting times to the zoo. A contribution towards travel cost is available.
