Description

Role

DMU STUDENTS ONLY

Introduction

DMU has set a bold and ambitious transformation strategy to deliver “data, technology and digital that is fit for a leading, innovative and empowering University.” As part of this, the University has committed to launching a new Digital Innovation Hub to act as an engine to drive new iterative and agile ways of working and embed digital mindsets and culture.

To set the foundation for the Hub, a coalition from across DMU created a shared vision and initial operating model for the Hub. We’re now putting the Hub into action using a real mission so we can learn how to best embed the Hub into DMU

Our mission

Our research has uncovered that data at DMU cannot be used in an integrated way to form an overall picture of an individual student's attainment, attendance, and engagement. So for this mission we’re exploring how DMU could use data in an integrated way, so that both staff and students have an individualised picture of each student’s attainment, attendance, and engagement. This will support improving student outcomes, reducing non-continuation, and enabling social mobility.

Our focus is to help students feel better communicated with. We believe that this will help students receive, visualise and act on information or communications in a dynamic and student-centric way. The ultimate mission would be to help students, and staff, to understand what information is useful, how it is shared and who can intervene to support students when they may be at risk of poor outcomes throughout their time at DMU.

The client is ideally looking to recruit students to work this Thursday/Friday running a workshop style session.

Duties and responsibilities

The role of students

  • As part of the innovation process the Hub is undertaking, we are in the ideas and testing phase. We are coming up with ways to solve this challenge of helping students feel better communicated with and this means students have a big role to play in how the Hub shapes and tests their ideas through prototypes. Between 22 April and 17 May we will be hosting a series of paid activities and we want the student voice throughout. Students can expect the following tasks:
  • Student interviews (online and on campus) where we will deepen our understanding of the problem area
  • Co-creation sessions with students: Focus group style set up where we explore features and functionalities of possible digital solutions, using insights front students to shape the design of our prototype
  • Prototype testing sessions: Presenting clickable prototypes to students in an interactive session to get their feedback, and evaluate how desirable (or not) the ideas are

Skills and experience

What students can expect from this experience

  • Participants will be an important voice for the University to create student-centric solutions to big challenges worth solving, part of an exciting journey that demonstrates creative thinking, design and innovation skills
  • All activities are campus-based or online
  • Activities are scheduled in advance
  • Activities will take place on weekdays between 9am and 5pm from 22 April to 17 May
  • Activities will run for no longer than two hours
  • No prior skills or experience are required
  • Students agreeing to be involved will be paid for their time by the hour
