Unitemps are recruiting for 3 Overnight Wellbeing Officers for the Access & Widening Participation Office. This role is for a June 17th start date and has a projected end date of September 2nd 2024. This a full-time role at 33 hours per week. Payment is set at £22.12 + holiday pay per hour. This role will be UCL hybrid working; part from home and part from campus. This role requires a UCL issued DBS check which we will arange with the succesful candidates.

Context

The UCL Access and Widening Participation Office delivers activities to encourage applications from students from socio-economic backgrounds currently under-represented in higher education.

Main purpose of the job

As an Summer School Overnight Wellbeing Officer, you’ll be responsible for looking after participants on the Summer School overnight. Working in a team of two you will be the first point of contact for Year 12 students staying in university halls of residence, providing pastoral support and guidance if any issues arise during the night. You will work the hours of 10.00pm-8.00am, with accommodation, breakfast and dinner included.

The Summer School will run on the following dates and you will be required to work a minimum of 2 out of 3 Summer Schools.

22 July – 26 July 2024

5 August – 9 August 2024

19 August – 23 August 2024

You will also be required to undertake Safeguarding training and role specific training prior to the role. There will be the opportunity to undertake First Aid and Mental Health First Aid training in prepation for the role, though this is not compulsory.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Supervise Year 12 Students on the UCL Summer School overnight
  • Work unsupervised with access to staff in the event of a serious incident or emergency
  • Provide summer school participants with pastoral support if any issues arise in the night and address any behavioral concerns in a timely manner
  • Problem solve and escalate to Access Team staff when appropriate
  • Work collaboratively with fellow Overnight Wellbeing Officer to deliver appropriate support to students ensuring safeguarding policies are adhered to
  • Escalate safeguarding and welfare concerns using the support systems provided appropriately
  • Liaise with the Designated Safeguarding Officers, Senior Access Officer and Summer School team to decide the appropriate course of action in emergency situations

Skills and experience

Qualifications, experience and knowledge

  • Understanding of the aims and objectives of widening participationUnderstanding of the barriers to Higher Education that may affect participants
  • Experience of working with children or young people, through paid or voluntary work
  • Experience of providing pastoral support for young people or undergraduates

Skills and abilities

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to communicate effectively with young people from diverse backgrounds, and particularly those from groups under-represented in Higher Education
  • The ability to take initiative and resolve problems when needed
  • The ability to take and give instructions effectively
  • The ability to reflect on own performance and improve, and to respond well to constructive feedback
