The Education and History departments at LJMU are developing teaching resources using historic advertising in Key Stage 2 (KS2) history provision. The underlying principle is that 8 – 10 year olds have an established literacy around commercial advertising which they will be able to apply to historic advertising to learn about the past and create enthusiasm for the study of history.

The role will involve the further development of materials suitable for delivery through the Key Stage 2 history curriculum building on work undertaken by previous interns.

Duties and responsibilities

We are looking for two students with an interest/specialism in primary education, specifically Key Stage 2 history, and the links that can be made to other subjects in the primary curriculum.  Key tasks will include:

• Refine and develop the pedagogical approach being followed in the development of these materials for the teaching of history in Key Stage 2.

• Finalise the Unit of Learning (UoL) for schools to deliver the history of advertising in KS2.

• Produce a teaching pack with resources to accompany the UoL for schools.

• Liaise LJMU history specialist staff to develop materials with a solid base of subject knowledge in the UoL.

• Convene and run a focus group with local teachers to test and refine the mateials.

• Trial the UoL in schools to test the efficacy of the materials.

Skills and experience

We are keen to recruit students with the following skills, experience, knowledge and aptitude:

1. Knowledge of and experience of teaching and learning history in Key Stage 2.

2. Ability to work in a team and experience of facilitating meetings.

3. Experience of working with a range of different stakeholders (i.e. The History of Advertising Trust).

4. Problem solving.

5. Imaginative and creative.

6. Self-motivated, able to work to deadlines to complete a defined task.

7. Excellent personal organisation skills, particularly time management and prioritisation skills.

8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

9. Computer literacy skills (e-mail, web, word processors, spreadsheets, data-bases etc).
