Description

Role

This is a fully funded and paid summer internship, which is part of a 5-year NIHR-funded project in collaboration with the National Health Service Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). One focus of this work is to understand better why people from ethnic minority communities are less likely to donate blood. This work will have a number of components to help us better understand this question.

First, the internal will conduct an online audit of the webpages of the blood services across the states of the USA, Europe, South America, Africa, Asia and Australasia to see document which services have specify campaign to recruit ethnic minority donors and why? This will involve logging into al the web page of the blood services world-wide to audit the information they present to the external would about recruiting ethnic minority donors. We have the templates in place to do this. This will be conducted in collaboration with Biomedical Excellence for Safer Transfusion (BEST) Collaborative(http://www.bestcollaborative.org/index.php).

Second, we have developed and evaluated a number of co-designed and co-produced films working with our co-design partner (Action on Blood :https://www.actiononblood.org/). Part of this internship is to work with our partners and us to help evaluate these films, in terms of the qualitative and quantitative data we have on the films (people’s reactions to the films, free responses and emotional ratings). This will involve extending a coding frame to produce logic maps. We will guide you on how to do this.

A third component of this internship will be an opportunity to work with interview data we are collecting to better understand barriers and motivations for blood donation in various community and cultural groups. This will involve reading through interview transcripts and identifying key themes and constructs.

This work will directly feed into NHSBT’s policies for 2025.
