Role

Silicon Grid software is used for the real time control of large generators, such as Wind and Solar Farms. It is installed in control rooms of network operators to protect the electricity infrastructure and optimise the output from the generators. Known as Active Network Management (ANM), this software automatically manages power flow. ANM is important for expanding renewable energy generation, smoothing output variability, and helping to avoid issues such as overloading. Through ANM, Silicon Grid contributes to a net zero future.

Silicon Grid Ltd are looking to recruit several new team members for permanent roles. Our work pipeline is mostly in the UK, is very healthy and growing globally.

This role is a software developer, to help our lead developer create and maintain new features in the Python software modules used by our clients.

Duration and work pattern is negotiable; however successful candidates must have permission to work in the UK and expect to have a probationary period in the Manchester office working full time.

Duties and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

You will already be versatile in producing and array of software components.  In addition, you will

  • work with experts in Power Systems and follow their guidance.
  • join a small development team and actively participate in development project meetings.
  • present the functionality you build to other teams and to clients.
  • support and test new project tools to improve current processes. For example, a tool that automatically inputs data, so an engineer won’t have to.
  • coordinate with other teams/disciplines where necessary for knowledge exchange and workflow optimisation.
  • become familiar with Agile and DevOps
  • be responsible for creating supporting documentation
  • have a growing involvement in design and testing

Don’t worry! We’re not expecting you to have power systems or electrical engineering experience, if you do, that’s a bonus. We will build your skills and confidence in a fun and supportive environment, challenging you to develop your own skillset.  

Qualifications

  • We are flexible on qualifications, though a relevant first degree is expected.
  • We also welcome all levels, Bachelors, Masters, or Doctorate – our small team is a mix of all.

Skills and experience

Experience

Ideally more than a year since your first degree, with at least a year delivering completed software.

An inquisitive mind, along with a desire to develop and learn are critical.  Comfort with the following:

  • Industrial Communication Protocols including DNP3, ICCP and IEC61850
  • Scripting, testing and configuration of industrial communications.
  • Python
  • Scripts
  • IT development
  • Agile and iterative development
  • GITHUB
  • Unit Tests
  • Supporting documentation
  • Use Cases

Any of the following (or similar) are a bonus, but not essential:

  • Electrical engineering / Power systems
  • C++
  • Linux

Salary: £25,000 - £35,000 negotiable above this depending on experience

Anticipated starting salary is £25,000 – 30,000 for a new graduate.
