As part of the Staffordshire Digital Innovation Partnerships Project, Staffordshire University has entered into a partnership with Promtek UK Ltd, an innovative and growing North Staffordshire-based weighing, control and process management technology company. Promtek offers a range of process automation technology and instrumentation for bulk material handling processes of all sizes and complexities, utilising the software engineering know-how of its in-house Teams. Promtek’s Software and Engineering Service and Support Teams also assist its global clients with equipment servicing, breakdowns and critical spares and calibration of its clients’ weighing equipment to UK Certification standards.

Promtek’s systems are used all around the world to control industrial weighing processes, such as weighing bulk ingredients for cake, biscuit and bread manufacturing. We are looking to recruit a graduate or undergraduate Software Developer for either a placement opportunity or fixed term contract for a period of 12 months to help deliver a specific key Project.

As part of Promtek’s strategy to build on our established brand in the industrial weighing industry, this Project is to research and develop the manual weighing processes of our existing control system into a stand-alone, modern mobile application with the potential to reach more markets.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Work with our teams to understand our existing manual weighing process system and the value it brings to our customers.
  • Research and document techniques on how to communicate with industrial scales and weighing equipment.
  • Develop a mobile application for end users, which will instruct them what ingredients need to be weighed, the target weight required, and also record the final weight.
  • Integrate the new mobile application with our existing Promtek ecosystem.

Skills and experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Requires a solid amount of practical experience with the full stack of technologies such as C#/.NET Core and/or Java.
  • Experience with using native code within managed applications would be desirable e.g. C++ CLI/CLR within .Net core, Android NDK, JNI or similar.
  • Knowledge of mobile application development, such as Android or Xamarin.
  • Demonstrable experience with relational databases such as SQL.
  • Experience with development environments such as Visual Studio and version control such as Git.
  • Experience of Rest Services for data communication with formats such as JSON and XML.

The duties and responsibilities of this Role Specification are not exhaustive, and the post-holder will be required to perform additional duties and responsibilities over and above those defined to meet the needs of the business.
