Role
The successful applicants will support data collection and analysis within research projects based in the Biostatistics Research Group in the Department of Population Health Sciences. During this internship you will develop your statistical skills and learn new statistical software packages.

Working hours: 37.5 hours per week across 5 days

Length of Internship: 8 weeks, which includes 3 weeks on a group project, and 5 weeks on an individual project.

Duties and responsibilities
This role will last for 8 weeks, including;

3 week group project:
• Develop statistical programming skills in R and RShiny
• Work collaboratively with fellow interns to create an RShiny app

5 week individual project on one of the following topics:
• Project 1 - Evidence synthesis methods for health technology assessment: This project will involve data processing tasks, including data extraction and formatting, as preparation for applying models to clinical data from trial reports using a disease case-study in rheumatoid arthritis. It will also involve programming of models using specialist statistical software (e.g., WinBUGS)
• Project 2 - Update of a systematic review on lifestyle interventions for preventing Type 2 diabetes mellitus: This project will involve reviewing the literature and undertaking a preliminary analysis of the extracted data using statistical software (e.g., R, Stata).
• Project 3 - Data visualisation in RShiny: This project will involve the analysis of patient reported outcomes data. An RShiny app will then be created to illustrate the data and results in an interactive way.

Interns will have the opportunity to attend the Young Statisticians’ Meeting 2024 in Birmingham.

Skills and experience
Essential
• Must be enrolled on second/third year of a relevant degree level programme in the UK. Whilst mathematics, statistics or data science are preferred subjects, other relevant subjects include: economics, computing, physics, biomedical sciences, psychology *
• Basic knowledge of statistical concepts *
• High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to undertake research and administrative activities using English Language materials and to communicate effectively with staff *

Desirable
• Experience with relevant office and other software packages (for example, document processing packages such as MS Word or Latex, statistical packages such as R, Stata or WinBUGS) *
• Experience and knowledge of applying research skills and techniques to deliver outputs on time and to the required quality.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and in writing
• Ability to work as part of a team
• Self-motivated and ability to meet deadlines

Additional information
In addition to the salary, up to £1,000 is available towards the cost of travel and accommodation if applicants are not living locally to the University of Leicester.
