Description
Role
As a Study Skills Tutor you will provide one to one tutorials to students with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) and will encourage students through developing strategies and facilitation, to take responsibility for their own learning. You will be supporting students who have Disabled Student Allowance (DSA).
You will work with the student to create a work plan, set objectives and support them with their study skills. This will not be a proof-reading service.
Hours are flexible. We are looking for someone who can offer from 10-30+ hours a week.
Please note this role is not suitable for students to apply.
This role is suitable for candidates who hold a relevant teaching qualification and are a member of a relevant and recognised professional body (please see Skills and experience section for list of complete qualifications required)
The role be a mixture of campus based working and working from home.
Duties and responsibilities
To support students in developing their study skills strategies. This will include setting clear standards and expectations for your sessions and the nature of the help you provide will be in line with the students’ learning preferences and will include:
•
To support in strategies for managing academic reading including the use of assistive software provided through the DSA
•
To support in planning, time management and organisational skills
• To support with strategies for note-taking during lectures
• To support with strategies for decoding questions and getting started with assignments
•
To support with strategies for idea generation to start your academic writing and research strategies
•
To support with strategies for developing academic writing including structuring assignment and referencing
•
To support with strategies for developing independent proof-reading skills using assistive software
•
To support with strategies for working effectively with groups and presentation skills
To support with strategies for a variety of revision methods and memory techniques
•
To support with strategies for how to make use of additional time and other exam access arrangements
Other duties include
•
To encourage student engagement for both 1:1 study skills support and Masterclasses.
•
To offer both face to face and remote sessions to students and be available for on campus work.
• Administrative duties linked to the role such as logging interactions, calls, emails, appointments onto C4C, creating timesheets on CUDOS.
• Keeping the administration team informed of any disengaging students
• Being proactive in adding availability onto My gateway
• Contacting students and booking them in for 1:1 session
Skills and experience
Relevant Degree
Teaching Qualification (PGCE or equivalent) or demonstrable teaching experience
Must be A member of one of the below professional bodies:
•PATOSS (full or associate membership)
•BDA (full professional membership)
•ADSHE (professional membership)
•Dyslexia Guild (member, associate or fellow membership)
Completion of 5 NAS or willing to work toward these
Substantial experience of working with students with specific learning differences on a one to one and in groups
Awareness and understanding of the Disabled Students’ Allowances and ensuring that students access this
Excellent organisational and time management skills
Commitment to the delivery of professional service
Demonstrable understanding/ awareness of empathy and non-verbal communication skills
A proactive nature and committed team player with the ability to support colleagues and to contribute to team activities and objectives
