Demonstrators will be required to assist academic staff in delivering teaching materials in a specific module, mainly for practical classes. Applicants should have a keen interest in supporting the learning of our undergraduate and postgraduate MSc community.
Supporting the learning of undergraduate and postgraduate Geography students in practical classes. Please specify which module(s) you wish to apply for in your application

• GY1423 Exploring our Digital Planet. 66 hours on campus practicals, probably split between 3 demonstrators. Skills/experience needed are: 1) Understanding of basic concepts of GIS and interest in geographical data. Human and/or physical geographers welcome. 2) Experience of using ARCGIS software desirable.
• GY2410 Histories and Philosophies of Human Geography. 1 demonstrator - 18 hours on campus.
• GY2411 A Critical Geography of Environment and Development. 1 demonstrator - 18 hours on campus.
• GY2413 Social and Cultural Geography. 1 demonstrator for 5 hours on a field day.
• GY3411 Contemporary Environmental Challenges. 1 demonstrator, 8 hours on campus and up to 8 hours on a field day. Background in environmental geographies is required.
• GY7701 Fundamentals of GIS. 3 demonstrators for 20 hours of practicals each and 1 demonstrator for 10 hours supporting surgeries/drop-ins. A good level of competence with ArcMap (part of ArcGIS) is required
• GY7702 R for Data Science. 3 demonstrators for 20 hours of practicals each. Skills: - Programming in R; Data wrangling (table manipulation and operations, e.g., join); Reproducible analysis principles; Data analysis (Descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Correlation, Data visualisation, Machine learning, Unsupervised (clustering), Supervised (regression, support vector machines, neural networks)
• GY7704 Geographical Visualisation. 1 demonstrator for 16 hours of practicals. Skills: Experience with mapping packages such as ArcGIS and/or ArcGISOnline
• GY7705 Remote Sensing. 2 demonstrators for 15 hours of practicals each.

Please note that if face to face practical classes are cancelled, the demonstrating roles may cease with immediate effect unless there is a requirement to support online delivery
• Relevant degree and knowledge of subject matter and continuing education by means of a postgraduate doctoral degree in a relevant subject.
• High level of proficiency in English, sufficient to support teaching and administrative activities utilising English language materials and to communicate effectively with staff and students
• Evidence of good, effective oral communication, presentation and training skills
• A commitment to high-quality teaching
• Proven competency in IT, and familiarity with a computerised environment.
• Demonstrators should have undergone/arrange to undertake the ‘Preparing to Teach in Higher Education Programme’ programme provided by the Leicester Learning Institute.
